We were lucky enough that Debora asked to volunteer with us to gain professional experience to help build her portfolio. Debora has been photographying a diverse range of activities and subjects at The Old Library, including performances, art and gardening groups, food shots and the wider goings on in the building.

Debora has said that this has been great for her confidence and trying new subject matter. You can see some of her images on our website and facebook page and her personal work is on Instagam, @debora.terreiros.photography. Give her a follow!

Debora moved to Bodmin from Portugal as a young child. She’s currently a 3rd year student at Plymouth College of Art studying BA photography. Debora is a contemporary photographer, she likes to explore themes that are personal to her such as her own experiences and wider social issues, her current project is on body image and her own struggle with it. Debora’s final year show centres on these themes, if you’re in Exeter in May 2022 visit The Positive Lights Project to see The Lighthouse Collectives work and other students in the collective.

Debora finishes her degree in May and hopes to continue to build her portfolio and to get into property photography.

  2. Young people in Bodmin create new words to make sense of the climate crisis

On Saturday 25th September a group of ten young people from Bodmin engaged in a workshop to create a performance in response to the climate crisis.

The workshop was led by Toby Peach who is an Associate Director of the interactive theatre-makers, Coney, where he works with young people and families, developing a playful activism practice.

The group of young people worked with Toby through games and discussion to produce a piece of work highlighting the climate crisis. The young people created an interactive digital installation and described the workshop as “learning together and having fun”.

For some of these young people it was the first time meeting each other but it was a welcoming space and many left feeling like they had made new friends. Assisting the event were the community leaders George and Amy who are both 17. They were excellent role models to the group of young people.

So what did the group create? The digital installation premiered at an evening event at St Petroc’s church in Bodmin on the topic of Creative Responses to climate change. The audience were encouraged to dial a number on their phones to hear some new words that were created through the workshop. Words to make sense of some of the madness.

    Hear the sound recordings here.

A new global survey found that nearly 60% of young people said they felt very worried or extremely worried about the climate crisis. By using creative methods it can help raise awareness of the need to create a more sustainable future and provide young people with a platform.

The workshop was organised by intoBodmin and Agile Rabbit. The project received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 101036029 and from the University of Exeter Global Systems Institute.

  3. BodMAXX over Christmas

A window installation in the Bodmaxx Studio (81b Fore Street) for intoBodmin’s Window Wanderland project. The installation is based around the theme of ‘3 Wise Beings’, which is an adaptation of the 3 Wise Men. As well as being a beautiful gallery exhibition, it’s also a participatory project where people are invited to come into the Bodmaxx space and say who their ‘3 Wise Beings’ would be in their lives, in Bodmin and in the world – which will then be added onto the running video in the window.

There’s Live 3D printing in the installation (by 3D Printing Cornwall) and a lot of the set, including the fruits, have been made from this technology. The monitors are also portraying the journeys of the 3 Wise Men and how they could have potentially travelled to Bodmin eg over sea, via the Beacon etc. This installation is a collaboration between FDA Digital Media Students & Graduates and Bec from Bodmaxx.

With this installation, BodMAXX are beginning to explore how empty shops can be transformed into potential gallery spaces. If you’re an artist who lives in Bodmin and you’d like your work to be shown next in this gallery space, then please get in touch and email bodmaxx@intobodmin.co.uk
